The museum’s main focus is to collect all the American art of the 20th and 21st centuries. The museum has a permanent collection of artworks, ranging from the 19th century to this century. There is a massive collection of more than 25,000 sculptures, paintings, films, videos, drawings, prints, photographs, and artifacts from old to new media.

There are more than 3500 artists whose works are exhibited in the museum. The museum’s main emphasis is to display the art of those living legends and upcoming artists. The museum also conducts annual and biennial exhibitions, an excellent platform for the younger generation artists.

The museum was opened in 1966, and until 2014 it was housed at 945 Madison Avenue at Manhattan’s Upper Eastside. This was a building designed by Marcel Breuer and Hamilton-Smith. This museum was closed in October 2014, and the same was relocated to a new building designed by Renzo Piano located at 99 Gansevoort Street in the west village of Lower Manhattan.

The new museum was reopened in the year 2015 on the 1st of May. The museum also houses an excellent auditorium, four large terraces; all of these are linked with the outer staircases.
